Gay,
Lesbian Bi-Sexuality
Issues and Lifestyle
The
process of self-acceptance for a gay/lesbian/bisexual
person can be challenging, sometimes causing depression, anxiety or
substance
use problems. Life can be imbued with a sense of feeling bad or
inferior, just
for being who you are. For the gay/lesbian person, the lack of
self-acceptance
can be a major issue. Living in a society, which legalizes
discrimination
against homosexuality, can create a lack of healthy role models, fears
about
commitment, and extreme discomfort about being real and honest with
your self,
and with the world.
I
am skilled at
supporting people through the process of
looking at the various aspects of the coming out process, and of
dealing with
life as a gay/lesbian/bisexual person, in all it’s challenges
and, joys. I
can help you to understand how depression,
anxiety and/or substance use can complicate your perception of yourself
and of your
relationships. I can help you to grieve whatever issues of loss may be
there,
and to learn new coping strategies for living productively and
creatively. It
is common for depression, anxiety and sometimes excessive substance
use, to be
reactions to the isolation, stigma and fear, generated by forces of
homophobia.
I
can help you to free
yourself from the effects of
homophobia, and whatever childhood issues may be holding you back, in
your
relationships, communication patterns, or self-image. I can help you to
work
with your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, to have more choices, and
a
greater sense of internal freedom. A happy and secure inner self will
grow and
help you to be who you really are.
